Description

The purpose of breast implant removal surgery is to take out implants from patients who’ve had breast augmentation or reconstruction. During the procedure, the surgeon may also remove any leaked silicone and the surrounding scar tissue (called the breast capsule) that forms after the implant is placed. While this scar tissue is usually soft and doesn’t need removal, it can sometimes harden, causing pain and discomfort—one of the main reasons for removing both the implant and the scar tissue. Since breast implants aren’t meant to last a lifetime, they typically need to be replaced or removed every 10-15 years, depending on the patient’s needs. In some cases, the outer shell of the implant may degrade, leading to silicone leaks and hardened scar tissue, which makes implant removal necessary.
